What is Acne?

Acne, otherwise known as acne vulgaris or common acne is not something that affects only teenagers. It can affect people of any age group, from the age of ten to forty. Acne can be visible on your skin in any of these forms like congested pores, whiteheads, blackheads, pustules, cysts and pimples.

Causes of Acne

There is no one factor that is responsible for acne. This occurs at the time of puberty when the oil glands come to life after being stimulated by the male hormones from the adrenal glands of both boys as well as girls. This oil, known as Sebum, is a natural substance that actually lubricates and protects your skin. In certain situations, the cells that are closer to the surface actually block the openings of the sebaceous glands, thereby causing an oil build up. It is this oil that stimulates the bacteria on your skin to multiply, thus causing the surrounding tissues to become inflamed. The inflammation near the skin’s surface results in a pustule and if the inflammation is a little deeper then it forms a pimple or papule. However, if the inflammation is much deeper, then it results in a cyst. Some of the other causes of Acne include pressure, medicines and occupation.

Medications for Acne

In case your acne has not been controlled by normal treatments, meet your physician or fix up a time with a local dermatologist who can assist you with topical antibiotics and anti bacterials like Benzaclin or erythromycin, Duac or Clindamycin. Like wise your doctor may begin treatment with some oral antibiotics like tetracycline or other antibiotics like amoxicillin, cefadroxil.

Prevention of Acne

One of the best ways to prevent acne from happening is to make sure that you lead a life of moderation. Ensure that you have a healthy diet and give your body a minimum of six to eight hours rest. Wash twice a day and keep your face and skin clean at all times.

Acne Risk Factors

Acne should not be taken lightly. It is important to treat it at the earliest; otherwise it can actually do a lot of damage. When the cysts burst, they may cause permanent scarring of the skin on your face. This can be quite embarrassing for you. In a few instances, if acne is not treated immediately it can cause a lot of pain as well as swelling and you may find touching the face very painful.

Acne Treatment

You can begin your acne treatment when you are affected by it. It is important to understand the reasons for acne. The focus of acne treatment is to first unclog the pores and then kill the bacteria and at the same time reduce the oil levels. You can unclog or open the pores by using mild cleansers like a mild cleansing bar or liquid. This will keep your skin clean and reduce irritation or sensitivity. You can also use a wide range of mild scrubs, exfoliants and masques. Likewise there are many anti bacterial cleansers that help in killing the bacteria. Apart from these, you have topical applications like gels, creams and lotions that can be applied to the affected area.
